Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman has a thing about large playful animals. A previous Thames festival had his rubber duck, and this year (September 2014) it was the turn of the Hippo. This was parked right outside our flat at Vauxhall, so we saw a lot of him, both from land and from the river boats we use.

The sculpture was placed as part of the Totally Thames festival. It is a reminder that 125,000 years ago, there really were hippos in the Thames, and a fossil of one found in Trafalgar Square is in the Natural History Museum.
