Oct '14 saw the fourth annual arts festival in Bournemouth. Under the amazing curatorship of Director Carol Maund, the festival grows every year. And this year there was a burgeoning fringe too. Here's a taste of what we enjoyed.

The opening weekend highlight was our old friends Carabosse with their fire garden. We have seen them at Brighton and Battersea, and now Bournemouth. They create a magical space with all their different displays of real fire. There was even a proper 'river of fire' in the Bourne. A health and safety officer's nightmare.

We also enjoyed all the wacky free cabaret events in the lower gardens. Examples included The lift (below and movie) and the People's Front Room (in the bandstand, converted to a lounge) as well as dancing in the Square to the Regular Joe's, and the 'new beach hut' competition.

We went to see Fuel's production, The Roof, where the audience are in the middle encircled by a 360 degree stage set of rooftops where the actors play out a computer game, using parkour. We wore headphones for the soundtrack. It was an immersive experience - 'game over'. WATCH VIDEO CLIP BELOW FOR A FLAVOUR

We went twice to St Peter's church. First to see the world premiere of a jazz oratorio composed by pianist Robert Mitchell. Called Invocation, it was a piece in praise of teachers, including those in the black culture like Martin Luther King.

The second concert at St Peters was by Fieri Consort. They sang choral pieces by Poulenc, Saint Saens, Ravel, Stravinsky and others. Interesting and unusual - not the sort of thing we normally go to.

At the Pavilion we enjoyed a concert by the Bourenmouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kirill Karabits. A great rendering of the Rachmaninov 'Paganini Rhapsody' with the soloist, the young musician of the year Martin James Bartlett.

We went top a couple of events at the very wonderful Shelley Theatre, just round the corner from us. We enjoyed the madcap comedy cabaret from Slightly Fat Features - juggling, magic, music and more. Then the virtuoso playing of Jack Maguire (violin) and Carlos Bonell(classical guitar). Really enjoyed the world premiere of a suite by local composer Paul Cole 'depicting' Latin America.
